Who is the Obeya Training intended for?
Obeya, also known as Visual Management Room (VMR), is a Japanese term for a management method from Lean, which literally means ‘large space or room’. In this large space or room, current information is available that is visualized, for a group of collaborating people, so that they can quickly, effectively and in short cycles initiate and follow up on improvements.
The Obeya training has been developed for both improvement managers who are planning to implement one or more Obeya rooms within their organization and for managers who want to use the Obeya method to gain a deeper insight into both operational aspects and improvement initiatives.
The essence of Obeya is:
- That it is a space or room where strategy (plans), (operational) performance and improvements come together on three walls: the Obeya Room
- That conversations are held at management level about realizing the strategy
- That a periodic performance dialogue takes place
- That the realization of the strategic goals is secured
- That necessary actions are defined to – Secure the realization of improvements – Secure the realization of operational performance/customer value
- That multidisciplinary (complementary) teams use the Obeya space for all of the above
How long does the Obeya training take?
The on-site training lasts 2 days from 09:15 to 16:30. Basic knowledge of Lean, Agile and Six Sigma is desirable, as well as basic knowledge and skills in coaching teams. The level of the training is HBO level.

The content of the Obeya Training
During the training, we begin on the first day by laying the theoretical foundation, covering the fundamentals of the Obeya method and how it works. We will then guide you step by step (wall by wall) through how to practically set up and design the Obeya room. In addition, we will take a closer look at the different roles within an Obeya and discuss their associated responsibilities. We will also pay attention to the effects that the introduction of an Obeya room can have and what coaching role is expected of you during this change. Furthermore, we will cover several coaching methods that are relevant to Obeya meetings.
Of course, the training also covers how to not only realize the implementation of an Obeya room, but also how to ensure its continuity. In addition, we pay attention to the contemporary context of hybrid Obeya rooms (a combination of physical and digital aspects). To conclude, we cover the necessary ‘feeding’ support and facilities that an Obeya requires. With this, we offer a comprehensive program that enables you to realize successful Obeya rooms.

Why take an Obeya training?
Taking an Obeya training helps you and your organization to better align strategy and operations (and vice versa). But there is more. After completing an Obeya training you will have learned how to efficiently and effectively initiate and follow up on improvements, so that operations can realize the strategy. Last but not least, you will learn how to create a culture of continuous improvement and ownership.
The training is not purely instrumental; attention is also paid to conducting a performance dialogue in a safe and pleasant manner — but without beating around the bush. What is included in following an Obeya training, among other things, is:
- Learning to set priorities, make choices, and create focus
- Learning to manage in (short) cycles (in the cadence of the process)
- Learning how to create insight, transparency and openness
- Learning about coherence and collaboration
